Responsible cannabis hosting and guest safety

Host the people.
Control the risks.

Good cannabis hospitality is mostly logistics: adult-only access, clear consent, original packages, no pressure, sober transportation, locked storage and an emergency plan that exists before anyone arrives.

Responsible-use education for adults 21+ where lawful. This page does not recommend cannabis use, a product, amount, route or event. Host-liability, possession, on-site use, smoking, rental, workplace and transportation rules vary. Check current law and venue rules; never provide cannabis to a minor or let an impaired person drive.

THE USEFUL PART

Keep these in your head.

  • A cannabis-friendly invitation is not consent to use. Make participation optional, food and nonintoxicating drinks normal, and 'no thanks' complete.
  • Decide the legal venue, adult-only boundary, sober ride plan and overnight option before anyone arrives—not after impairment is visible.
  • Keep every product in its original labeled package and separate by form. Do not serve unlabeled gummies, baked goods, drinks, concentrates or homemade mixtures.
  • Lock reserve products, medicines and leftovers away from children, teens, pets and guests who should not access them. Child-resistant packaging is not a lock.
  • If someone may have been poisoned, contact Poison Control in the United States at 1-800-222-1222 or PoisonHelp.org; call 911 for collapse, seizure, trouble breathing or inability to wake.

Set expectations in the invitation

  • Adults only. State the age rule and confirm the venue allows the planned activity. Do not market, decorate or package for youth appeal.
  • Use is optional. No games, dares, rounds, surprise infusions or explanations required for declining.
  • Transport first. Share transit, designated-driver, rideshare, taxi and overnight options before the event.
  • Food and water stand alone. Offer ordinary food and appealing nonintoxicating drinks without presenting them as a way to become safe to drive.
  • Ask about access needs privately. Do not demand health disclosures; make seating, quiet space and a sober contact available.
  • Name the end time and exit plan. A defined close makes sober pickups and cleanup easier to coordinate.

Hospitality means a guest can attend, eat, talk and leave without using cannabis or defending that choice.

Clear the law, property and smoke rules

  1. Identify the property.

Private home, rental, hotel, licensed venue, public park, federal property and employer space can have different rules.

  2. Check possession and social-use law.

Adult-use legality does not automatically allow public consumption, unlicensed sale, gifting tied to payment, distribution or smoke exposure.

  3. Check the lease and venue contract.

Smoking, vaping, odors, guests, balconies, alarms, deposits and event rules may be more restrictive than state possession law.

  4. Protect nonconsenting neighbors and workers.

Ventilation is not permission to expose another person. Respect smoke-free areas and staff policies.

  5. Keep federal and interstate boundaries out.

Do not ask guests to cross a border, mail a product or carry cannabis onto federal property.

Use the 50-state law library as a starting map, then verify the date and exact rule with the responsible regulator.

A certificate can help match a regulated product and lot, but it cannot set a serving, predict an effect or make a social setting safe. Keep the lot-report workflow separate from guest decisions.

  • NO SURPRISE INFUSIONNever add cannabis to another person's food or drink without explicit, informed agreement. Label infused items visibly and keep them physically separate.
  • NO COMPETITIONNo fastest-finish, strongest-product, largest-serving or “keep up” framing.
  • NO MEDICAL SELLDo not diagnose a guest, promise relief, recommend replacing care or pressure someone because a product is marketed as wellness.
  • NO MIXING ASSUMPTIONAlcohol and other drugs can increase impairment. Do not present a combination as routine or predictable.
  • NO DECISION UNDER PRESSUREA person who is already impaired may need a quiet environment, observation, transport protection or medical help—not another product.

Make the sober trip home irreversible

  • Designate at least one person who will remain sober for the entire event.
  • Collect no one's keys by force; instead secure voluntary key storage and make the no-driving agreement explicit before use.
  • Budget for rides, keep transit details available and confirm that a guest has actually entered the correct vehicle.
  • Provide a lawful overnight option when feasible, with locked product storage and no expectation that sleep equals sobriety.
  • Do not use coffee, food, cold air, a shower or a home test as clearance to drive.
  • Prevent impaired operation of cars, bikes in traffic, boats, tools, stoves and other hazardous equipment.

NHTSA states that driving impaired by any substance is illegal across the United States and recommends a sober driver planned in advance. The sober-timer guide explains why elapsed time is a conservative planning aid, not a fitness-to-drive test.

Write the response card before the event

  • CALL 911Collapse, seizure, trouble breathing, blue/gray color, severe chest pain, dangerous behavior, serious injury, or inability to wake.
  • POISON EXPOSUREIn the United States, use PoisonHelp.org or call 1-800-222-1222 for free, confidential expert guidance. Do not guess or induce vomiting.
  • ANXIETY OR DISORIENTATIONMove to a quiet, low-stimulation place; have a calm sober adult stay nearby; reduce hazards; do not argue, shame or add substances.
  • PRODUCT RECORDKeep the original package, lot, ingredient list, estimated timeline and other substances available for responders without delaying care.
  • SAFETY BOUNDARYDo not leave a severely impaired person alone, let them wander, drive them yourself if you have used, or treat a delayed edible as a harmless joke.

Use the overconsumption response guide for the complete urgency and handoff checklist.

Close the event like a safety check

  1. Account for people.

Confirm each guest's sober driver, pickup, transit or overnight arrangement.

  2. Account for products.

Return every package to locked, labeled storage. Do not combine lots or send an unlabeled leftover home.

  3. Search the accessible zone.

Check tables, floors, cushions, bags, trash, yards and guest rooms for gummies, wrappers, roaches, cartridges, batteries and drinks.

  4. Separate waste.

Cool smoking material fully, follow local disposal rules and keep batteries/electronics out of ordinary trash when required.

  5. Preserve incidents.

Keep packages, lot numbers, photos, receipts, timing notes and case numbers if a health, quality or legal issue occurred.

  6. Review without blame.

Change the invitation, access control, product station, transport or guest count before the next event.
