THE USEFUL PART
Keep these in your head.
- Match company, product, form, lot or batch, dates, and net quantity before interpreting a single result.
- Keep analyte, result, unit, basis, method, and reporting limit together; a cropped potency number is not a usable report.
- A pass status covers only the panels, analytes, limits, sample, and jurisdiction identified on that report.
- ND, a blank, zero, and below a reporting limit are not automatically equivalent.
- If identity, report status, panel scope, or regulator records do not agree, pause the purchase or use and ask through an official channel.
First prove the report belongs to the package
Open the certificate from the regulated product label, licensed retailer, producer, or regulator-directed system. Then compare the record with the package in your hand. A brand-level report, a report for another flavor, or a PDF found through a general web search cannot clear the exact item.
New York OCM tells consumers that regulated adult-use products carry a QR code or link to the product's certificate of analysis. That is a New York market rule, not proof that every cannabis QR code nationwide is official. Confirm the seller and product in the responsible regulator's current records.
Know what each part of the report can answer

Read the report as a connected record. Separating a result from its sample ID, method, unit, qualifier, and limit removes the context needed to interpret it.
Units and basis come before comparison
A percentage by mass, milligrams per gram, milligrams per milliliter, milligrams per serving, milligrams per package, and micrograms per gram answer different questions. Compare values only when the analyte, unit, basis, and product form match—or when the package provides all information needed for a valid conversion.
- Flower and some inhalables: results may be displayed as percentage by weight, mass per gram, and package totals.
- Edibles and beverages: per-serving and per-package amounts need the labeled serving count and homogeneity context.
- Liquids and tinctures: concentration per milliliter differs from the total amount in a bottle or dropper.
- Dry-weight results: moisture has been excluded from the denominator; do not compare them casually with as-received values.
- Acid and neutral cannabinoids: THCA is not the same row as delta-9 THC, and a jurisdiction may require a defined total-THC calculation.

Translate ND, below-limit, zero, and pass carefully
ND commonly means an analyte was not detected or reported above a stated method threshold. <LOQ or another below-limit qualifier commonly means the laboratory did not report a reliable numeric quantity above that stated limit. A printed zero, blank cell, dash, and “not tested” can mean something else. Use the report legend and method notes rather than treating the marks as synonyms.
Pass is not a universal quality score. It means the reported sample met the applicable criterion for the named panel under that program. Some analytes may be reported without a pass/fail limit. Some panels do not apply to every product form. A clean cannabinoid panel cannot establish that pesticides, metals, microbes, mycotoxins, solvents, foreign material, moisture, water activity, or hardware were assessed.
Do not build an absolute claim from a reporting limit
“Not detected” does not prove that no molecule exists, that another method would have the same threshold, that every unit is identical, or that a drug test cannot be affected.
Check the panel scope against the product form
Testing requirements are jurisdiction- and product-specific. New York OCM's current testing-limits document lists product-dependent requirements for phytocannabinoids, microorganisms, mycotoxins, metals, water activity, moisture, foreign material, residual solvents, pesticides, and other analytes. It also shows that applicability and limits can differ among flower, pre-rolls, extracts, edibles, beverages, tinctures, topicals, and inhalables.
- Identify the regulated market.
Find the agency, rule set, and product category that control the report.
- Identify the exact product matrix.
Flower, infused flower, concentrate, edible, beverage, tincture, vape, and topical are not interchangeable laboratory samples.
- List the visible panels.
Open every page; a first-page pass badge may summarize only part of the report.
- Find exceptions and report-only fields.
A result can be required without a numeric pass/fail limit, and a panel may be inapplicable to another format.
- Check amendments and recalls.
A later report or regulator notice can change what the older PDF means for the product.
Use a six-stop pre-purchase screen
If one stop is unresolved, pause the purchase. Ask the licensed retailer or producer for the exact final report, then verify against the regulator's current license and recall information. A sale, review score, famous strain, spectrum badge, attractive QR code, or “lab tested” headline cannot repair missing traceability.

Treat the QR code as a route—not as proof
Inspect the printed destination before opening it when your device allows. A legitimate-looking square can lead to a brand homepage, an unrelated lot, an unsafe download, or a credential-stealing page. The Federal Trade Commission warns that malicious QR codes can direct people to spoofed sites or install malware.
- Prefer the code printed on the intact regulated label, then confirm the domain and certificate identity.
- Do not enter a password, payment card, identity document, or unnecessary personal information to view a product report.
- Reject a report that cannot be downloaded or read without an unexplained app, account, or permission request.
- Save the final report and note the access date when the product decision matters.
- Report a suspicious link through the licensed seller, producer, and regulator—not through contact details supplied only by the suspicious page.
What to do when the evidence breaks
