THE USEFUL PART
Keep these in your head.
- Physician-authorized patients may access medical cannabis; non-medical adult use is not legal.
- Adult-use possession remains illegal, though possession of up to 14 grams is generally punishable by a fine without jail under state decriminalization law.
- Patient home cultivation is not authorized.
The status, in one screen
Physician-authorized patients may access medical cannabis; non-medical adult use is not legal.
What this label does—and does not—mean
Only qualified, registered patients receive state-law protections; adult-use possession and sales remain illegal. It does not answer public use, driving, employment, housing, federal property, tribal jurisdiction, or a city's business rules.
Possession and use
Adult-use possession remains illegal, though possession of up to 14 grams is generally punishable by a fine without jail under state decriminalization law.
- Public consumption can remain prohibited even when possession is legal.
- Never drive, bike in traffic, boat, or operate machinery while impaired.
- Keep products in their original package and outside the passenger area when transporting within the state.
- Local ordinances and property policies can add restrictions without changing statewide status.
Home cultivation
Patient home cultivation is not authorized.
Plant counts are only the first layer. Lease terms, owner permission, visibility, locked-area rules, nuisance law, processing limits, and possession of harvested cannabis can each change the practical answer.
Medical access
Comprehensive medical program dispensed through licensed pharmacies.
A recommendation, registry card, out-of-state card, or diagnosis does not create identical rights everywhere. Confirm patient eligibility, reciprocity, purchase limits, approved forms, renewal rules, and caregiver rights with the official program.
Buying and retail status
Medical-only access through licensed therapeutic marijuana pharmacies.
Use the state regulator's live license lookup where available. A website, delivery claim, hemp label, social-media account, or storefront sign is not proof of a marijuana license.
What you need to buy legally
No legal recreational purchase route
This state has no licensed statewide adult-use marijuana market. A medical card or an out-of-state card does not authorize a recreational purchase.
Certification required; no separate card
How to qualify: Meet with an eligible practitioner and obtain the state-recognized written certification or recommendation; there is no separate patient-card application.
An authorized clinician sends a valid recommendation to a licensed therapeutic-marijuana pharmacy; Louisiana does not use a separate patient-card application.
At the dispensary: Bring government-issued photo ID; the licensed pharmacy verifies the clinician's active recommendation in its records.
Open the official patient instructions ↗Do not buy a generic “medical card” online
Only the credential, certification, recommendation, or registry process recognized by this state can authorize medical purchasing. Private evaluation services do not replace state approval where approval is required.
Travel, work, housing, and federal edges
- STATE LINESDo not take cannabis across a state border—even between two adult-use states.
- FEDERAL PROPERTYState permission does not control federal buildings, lands, installations, or federal transportation rules.
- WORKLegal possession does not guarantee workplace use or protection from a lawful drug policy.
- HOUSINGSmoking, cultivation, and possession can be restricted by leases, federal housing rules, or property policy.
- TRIBAL LANDTribal law and jurisdiction can differ from the surrounding state; verify with the relevant tribal authority.
Six-month legal direction
A new school-zone cannabis offense was signed ↗
HB 568 created a criminal offense for cannabis use within 2,000 feet of a school zone. Adult-use legalization proposals failed; the medical program remains in place.
