Grow-light buying worksheet

Buy the light.
Audit the whole load.

A giant “equivalent watts” badge cannot size a room, prove a light map, calculate a circuit, or predict a harvest. Start with the exact model, actual input, documented coverage, operating hours, heat, controls, and the rest of the equipment.

General product-comparison and planning information—not electrical design, code approval, cultivation advice, a yield forecast, or legal advice. Confirm home cultivation rules first. Follow the exact equipment instructions and use a qualified electrician for branch-circuit, wiring, grounding, damp-location, or installation questions.

THE USEFUL PART

Keep these in your head.

  • Compare actual input watts, documented photon output and efficacy, coverage maps, hanging height, controls, clearances, warranty, and support—not an equivalent-watts slogan.
  • Energy cost is arithmetic: total input watts × operating hours × days ÷ 1,000 × local price per kWh. It does not include every fan, pump, heater, dehumidifier, or utility charge.
  • A cost worksheet cannot approve a branch circuit. Inventory every load and ask a qualified electrician when capacity, wiring, protection, or damp-location suitability is unclear.
  • No light can promise yield, potency, plant health, compliance, or a safe indoor environment.

Clear the law and space before shopping

Home cultivation rules vary by state, locality, residence, program, age, plant maturity, access, visibility, lease, and property. In New York, the current OCM home-cultivation guidance covers adult limits, private-residence conditions, access control, electrical and mold concerns, and other boundaries. Use the New York home-grow planner or the 50-state library before turning a shopping list into a setup.

Measure the actual cultivation footprint, ceiling height, permitted hanging structure, door and work access, water path, ventilation, panel access, alarms, and clear route out. A light that physically fits may still violate mounting clearance, overheat a small enclosure, block service access, or belong on a circuit that already carries other loads.

PPF describes photon output from the fixture; PPFD describes photon density at a surface. Neither number alone tells you the plant's daily exposure, uniformity, canopy response, environmental control, or outcome. Compare like units and preserve the complete map—not a cropped corner of a listing image.

Estimate the light-only energy cost

Total light load0 W
Daily light energy0.00 kWh
Billing-period light energy0.00 kWh
Estimated light-only cost$0.00

This is arithmetic, not an electrical safety calculation or utility-bill promise. Enter actual input watts, not equivalent watts. It excludes fans, pumps, controls, heating, cooling, dehumidification, taxes, demand charges, rate tiers, and standby power.

Example check: two 300 W lights operated 12 hours a day for 30 days use 216 kWh. At $0.20/kWh, the light-only estimate is $43.20. The page calculator should reproduce those values.

Inventory the whole electrical and moisture system

BRANCH CIRCUITPanel label · breaker · voltage · receptacles · protection · other loads · electrician finding
LIGHTINGModel · quantity · nameplate watts · settings · timer/controller · hanging hardware
ENVIRONMENTFans · dehumidifier · air conditioner · heater · pumps · controls · startup behavior
WATERReservoir · tubing · drain · leak containment · shutoff · electrical separation
ALARM + FAILUREHeat · humidity · leak · smoke/CO · power loss · restart state · emergency access
OPERATIONSInspection · cleaning · record · recall check · stop-use signs · replacement route

Do not add nameplate watts and declare a circuit safe. Wiring, continuous loads, other outlets, protective devices, cord and plug condition, environment, local code, and equipment instructions all matter. Never daisy-chain power strips, defeat a ground pin, hide connections beneath reflective material, or put an energized connection where water can reach it.

Use a checkout record instead of a winner badge

  1. Save the exact manual.

Confirm model, input, settings, mounting, clearance, permitted environment, cleaning, faults, warranty, and disposal.

  2. Save the complete maps.

Record distance, footprint, dimmer level, units, and whether the test setup resembles your measured space.

  3. Verify certification claims.

A logo in a listing is not enough. Use the named certifier's database when available and match the exact model.

  4. Price the ownership system.

Include controller, approved mounting, energy, environmental equipment, cleaning, service, parts, and lawful disposal.

  5. Check support and recalls.

Prefer a traceable manufacturer, durable model identity, written warranty, reachable support, and a published recall route.

  6. Keep a rejection reason.

Missing input watts, unverifiable maps, unclear environment limits, unsupported mounting, or no manual is useful information.

Know the hard stops

  • HOT PLUG, CORD, DRIVER, OR RECEPTACLEStop use and obtain qualified direction; do not normalize heat, odor, discoloration, arcing, or repeated trips.
  • WATER OR CONDENSATION NEAR POWERDe-energize only when it is safe to do so and correct the moisture source and equipment suitability.
  • DAMAGED HANGER OR OVERHEAD SUPPORTDo not work beneath a light with a bent frame, loose fastener, damaged cable, or improvised anchor.
  • UNCLEAR RESTART BEHAVIORDo not assume a light, fan, pump, heater, or controller returns safely after an outage.
  • MISSING MANUAL OR MODEL IDENTITYDo not use another product's instructions or a marketplace answer as a substitute.
  • UNCONTROLLED HEAT OR MOISTUREA plant target does not authorize damp building materials, blocked ventilation, or a fire load.
